Recently, Serfaty has been working with light – beautiful fluid crushed silk standing lamps, pendants and mobiles all straight from a film that must be called Alice in Wonderland 2000 Leagues Under the Sea.
In 2000 I decided I was going to design and build a couch that tapped into the trend of bookshop cafes – a chair that reflected the genre within which it was placed. Quite a few designers put me on the path to furniture with personality. One in particular popped up on the WWW today and reminded me of that starting point.
Ayala Serfaty, of Aqua Creations, had designed custom furniture for the Red Sea Star Restaurant in Eilat, Israel. Please keep in mind the image below is from 1998, and therefore is allowed to be a little dated.
Stools shaped like octopii – have you ever heard of such a thing??! Perhaps a little too literal for my taste, even then, but I’m always impressed by people with the gumption to push an idea to the limit, and then convince someone to pay for it. So now I’m sharing her work with you.
The pieces that follow up after this project are wonderful, contemporary, tactile explosions of furniture that look set to run away from under you if you’re not paying attention.
